April has been designated Earth Day Every Day across all Job Corps. Pittsburgh contributed to this initiative by holding the second annual GO GREEN Fair. The day before the Fair, the celebration of GO GREEN started with an introduction assembly called Don’t Waste Your Waste. “When folks would say, I’m going to remodel and throw these materials ‘over there’ to dispose of them, there is no more ‘over there’. It is here in our environment and so our company has found a solution that helps those remodeling and disposing of what they do not want. The company offers them at low cost to others who might need a small piece of this or a recycled fixture of that. It is so important for the environment that we adhere to the saying, one person’s junk is another person’s treasure”, said guest speaker, Mike Gable, from Construction Junction. Construction Junction is a retail establishment recycling building materials, supplies, and equipment.
The companies that were represented at the Fair included the Builder’s Guild, Gordon Food Service, ALCOSAN, Bidwell Training, GTECH Strategies, Vegetation Mgmt Dept. of Duquesne Light, East End Food Cooperative, Clean Water Action and Ecolab. There was a demo of the Rain Water Barrel Collection system, rock painting by our recreation department, lime Jello from our Culinary arts students , and displays by our Fac Man, EHelp, HVAC, Biodiesel fuels, and Weatherization students. The PJCC Groundskeeper gave away flower seeds in little containers with his homemade compost. Student Government played videos on recycling for the future.
The entire student body participated. Those who completed an evaluation and visited all booths received a plant-able bookmark or recycling bag.
