Nine Student Success Stories at the Pittsburgh Job Corps Center

Stephen R. completed the Nursing Home Health Aide program in Nov. 2010.  He has taken his first CNA job and is further motivated to pursue additional education at Penn State Erie during the spring 2012 semester.

Brittany K. is a completer in the Culinary Arts program.  She decided to relocate to Pittsburgh and started work at Chipotle in May.  In August she accepted a position with Sodexo with a $2.00/hour wage increase and works for them at the University of Pittsburgh in the food service department.  She wants to go back to school for additional education in the culinary industry.  She has her own apartment now and is working hard to get a car and to be a good role model for her family.  It goes to show you that hard work pays off!

Devin W. completed E-Help and had to wait several months to take the IBEW `Local.  He was accepted into the IBEW Apprenticeship Program in Beaver County. He worked all summer in the first of four years of the apprenticeship.  He says he loves everything he is doing and is taking his career to the next level.

Justin V.  graduated high school in 2009.  He wanted to work in the construction field but was not sure how to reach that goal.  He enrolled in the Pittsburgh Job Corps and went into the Heavy Equipment Operator program.  Justin loved all the training, especially the hands on experiences, removing the old guard station on center and doing the off-center projects.  In spring 2011 he interviewed for the Apprenticeship program with Local 66.  He was accepted and completed the initial training program for the union.  He has worked for a number of different companies doing various types of jobs.  He likes using different equipment and gaining additional experience.

Harjap K. participated in the off-center training program at CCAC (the Community College of Allegheny County).  She completed the Phlebotomy program.  At first, she volunteered in a doctor’s office drawing blood, taking vitals, and scheduling patients.  She wanted the experience.  She continues to volunteer once a week and has enrolled in the UPMC/CCAC Young Adult Empowerment Program.  The program director, Gregory Grey stated that it is a pleasure to have her in the program and can see her easily succeeding in the medical field.

Destinee E. completed the Health Occupations program and obtained her CNA certification.  She found full time employment with the Highland Park Care Center located in East Liberty.  Destinee likes her job and the experience she is obtaining.  She wants to return to school and earn her R.N. license.

Charlene C. completed the Business Office Technologies program and attended CCAC.  She worked as an intern in the PJCC finance department.  She has been employed at Reed Smith as an accounts payable specialist since August 2008.  She was just named Employee of the Quarter at Reed Smith.

Ceiona M. graduated from CCAC with her Associates Degree in Early Education in May.  She now works full time as an Assistant Group supervisor for a local child care center.  She enjoys her job and plans to continue her education to earn a bachelor’s degree in education.

Mark R. has been offered a job with Safelite Auto and is making $11.00/hour until he is certified and then he will make $12.00/hour plus a $30 bonus for each job he completes.

All of these students attribute their success to the opportunities they had at the Pittsburgh Job Corps Center.
