Conservation Consultants Inc. has received a grant to expose youth between the ages of 16-24 to the Green Job industry. Forty students from the Pittsburgh Job Corps Center have been identified to participate in this endeavor. Scheduled for both July 27 and August 10, the students will take a tour of a green condo building on the South Side as well as the headquarters for Conservation Consultants. The student mix will be composed of the construction cluster.
PJCC students have been involved in setting up a new retail store called Restore for the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh. Construction students built shelves and sorted merchandise. A hardware store’s inventory was willed to the Habitat and donations of goods are accepted daily. Four to five students work every afternoon since May on this project. The Grand Opening was Friday evening, July 29, 2011. Restore is located in the Edgewood Town Centre. Students are using their building skills and learning customer service skills in the work world.
Another project which has turned into a learning lab for the construction cluster is an agreement with CARE Ownership House on the North Side. Students in HVAC, Weatherization, and Facilities Maintenance are spearheading this project for a non-profit organization. They are turning an old drug house into a residence of three apartments. The apartments are one, two, and three bedroom domiciles. This undertaking will take several years to complete and the work will be done by cohorts. This is an opportunity to apply skills and learn new rules of construction. The talking and planning stages are complete and the actual labor and demolition begins in August.
