Philadelphia Job Corps, launched their first class today with fifteen (15) enthusiastic students embarking upon a nine week learning experience with an entrepreneurship focus. Start Young Initiative: A Partnership between SBA and DOL, is a Job Corps National Office pilot targeted at young entrepreneurs to drive interest while creating alternative paths for Job Corps students. It’s all about exploring opportunities while expanding employment options. The introductory class meets twice per week for curriculum instruction, interpersonal development, business plan comprehension and design. Program outcome is each student will complete their/ a business plan. Strategically, through a guided curriculum, Dr. Tom Blue, instructor teaches and filters the various methods of a business plan. In addition, SCORE mentors support the instruction and are on site assisting students through the development process. Guest entrepreneurs present from various perspectives of operating a business, including but not limited to tax law, financial structure, business negotiation’s, client networking and public speaking. Program pilot benefit for the students as the charter group, together they will complete the learning experience focused with more business knowledge; become savvy in research skills about their specific interests; pay attention to relevant details; embrace the discipline required to be self-directed and take charge; outcome and goal is each student will complete their business plan. A Graduation for successful completion will be celebrated in June.
