Washington, DC- Student Government President, Justin Thomas and Secretary Nadirah Davis experienced an action packed week visiting Pennsylvania congressional leaders, policy makers and Job Corps supporters on Capitol Hill. Students shared their Job Corps experience highlighting how the Job Corps program has impacted their life, changed their thinking on how they see the world of education, work, and the experience was an eye opening perspective on life priorities. “Meeting the staffers made me nervous at first, but after talking with them and listening to their advice – especially about internships and how they got to Washington, they’re down to earth people. My experience was so much fun and exciting, I am really inspired”, commented Nadirah. Justin followed saying, “It wasn’t at all what I thought it would be, there were so many people, a lot of activity, I learned so much and there’s alot to take back to the Philadelphia students on center. The week long activity line up included a leadership conference providing students a variety of cutting edge learning activities, for example, employment readiness concepts, positive self-image strategies, communication skills. Students had the opportunitiy to engage up front and personal dialogue with National Job Corps Director, Edna Primrse, who answered several student questions from job readiness to goal setting, interviewing tips and techniques. During the National Job Corps Association meeting, 124 Job Corps Centers from across the nation were represented by students, center staff, consultants, contractors to celebrate student success, acknowledge center achievement, provide program updates and trends impacting student enrollment; education; and employment now and beyond.
