On Saturday morning, September 18, 2011, in Bangor, Team Penobscot raised $100 and was part of the more than 5,000 individuals who participated in the 15th annual Susan G. Komen Maine Race for the Cure. Seven members of Team Penobscot walked the 5K event and Penobscot student Ben Alexander placed 58th out of 783 runners with a very respectable time of 22:13. Penobscot student Kymnisha Denty eloquently summed up the day for Team Penobscot: “My experience at the Breast Cancer Awareness walk was a deep felt and heartwarming time. It was astonishing to see complete strangers coming together to support one deadly life changing disease. My Job Corps team got to see the smiles of the men and women who beat the odds and kicked cancers butt, before cancer got them. I realized that these people could never give up and they obviously didn’t because each year we see and hear more cancer survivors living to tell the tale of their recovery and how they knew if there’s a will there’s a way!!
