4/20/12 Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning. Established in 1988, GYSD is the largest and longest-running service event in the world, and the only day of service dedicated to children and youth. GYSD is celebrated each year in over 100 countries. This past Friday Penobscot students and staff volunteered at the following ten organizations in Eastern Maine: Bangor Area Homeless Shelter / Bangor Housing Authority / Bangor Parks & Recreation – Union Street Sports Complex / Brewer Housing Authority / City of Brewer Storm Drain Cleanup / Good Shepard Food Bank – Brewer / Lura Hoit Pool – Hampden / Ann’s House at Manna Ministries – Bangor / Orono Parks & Recreation and Spruce Run- Bangor. At the end of the day all volunteers were treated to a ice cream social.
