It is my honor to report that the 2012 Stand Down for Veterans was a tremendous success!!! The Paul Simon Chicago Job Corps students worked with the Illinois Department of Employment Services to serve homeless veterans and they “showed up and showed out”!!! OUR student employees performed the following duties during the event:
- Greeted veterans as they entered the establishment with extraordinary customer service.
- Managed the control of the “Barber Room”, which provided free haircuts for over 200 veterans.
- Acted as “liaisons” for the many vendors in attendance.
- Assisted with coordinating and setting up the dining room to serve meals to the veterans.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:
- Served 700 veterans a warm, wholesome meal!!!
The Deputy Director of the IDES summed up OUR students participation in this event with the following words: “If you all ( 48 Job Corps students) did not come today, I do not know how we would have pulled this event off”.
