Here’s a dream struggle victory story.
Before Job Corps, I worked dead-end jobs, not able to even keep them. A relative told me about Job Corps. I came to Job Corps to get me a trade to get better jobs. I studied Business Construction Technology, knowing this would help me be a little more well-rounded in some skills. I didn’t want to go back home. I grow up in the Hampton Roads area. Growing up in the area, I was thinking one day I would like to go into the Navy, but I didn’t know how to swim. Job Corps gave me a positive outlook on my life so, I took the Navy enlistment test and passed with a good score. I completed Job Corps and took my PiCAT test, so I could go into the Navy. My second test was too low. I could not go into the Navy, so I tried the Army. I was told I need to wait 60 days before I could retest. I got a job at Kings Dominion amusement park as a facility maintenance worker. While working at Kings Dominion, I remember some of the things Job Corps taught me, to work now play later, improve my people skills as well as time management. I work on my new job and myself. I retook the Navy test and passed. Thank you, Job Corps. My name is Cirrus Gaines. I’m in the Navy now from the lesson learned at Old Dominion Job Corps.
