North Texas Job Corps student Dariondrick “Wes” Moore is a prime example of what Job Corps can do for a young man looking for direction in his life. “I was trapped in poverty and living in a low-income apartment helping to support my family,” Moore recalls. “I was just going from job to job trying to make ends meet until one day I looked at my life and decided that I wanted more for my life.”
That more was North Texas Job Corps, where Moore completed the Security career technical training program, earning certifications in that field, became involved in student leadership on center and enrolled at Collin College to earn an associate’s degree–at no cost to himself–and while still enrolled at North Texas Job Corps.
North Texas Job Corps allowed Moore to “develop my skills without going into debt attending college or being in a continuous grind to keep the lights on.”
In addition to the Security training, Moore served as president of the North Texas Job Corps Student Government Association for two terms. He currently works as a campus ambassador at Collin College. “The leadership skills that I developed being the Student Government Association president have served me well as ambassador,” Moore said.
Moore also made the President’s List at the college last semester, earning a 4.0 grade point average.
What’s next on Moore’s path to success? After graduation he will go on a training deployment with the US Army Reserves, which he joined in 2014.
