Northlands Urban Forestry Students Beautify Campus

A beautiful spring day in Vermont is an ideal time for Urban Forestry students to attend to the many trees on the Northlands Job Corps Academy campus. Students were busy mulching, which involves removing grass and other growth around the tree that might compete for water, and then spreading shredded bark.

“It’s important to create a buffer to prevent mowers and weed wackers from injuring the trees,” Tearron Dinkins said.

Richard MacDonald pointed to several wounds on one small tree caused by lawn care equipment. “Injuries like this create a greater likelihood the tree will develop diseases,” he said.

Rajorl Waters added that injuries “can prevent water from reaching the top of the tree.”

The students’ great care was evident as they continued their work beautifying and protecting the many trees across the 66 acre campus.
