Northlands Students Show 450 High School Girls What “Women Can Do”

Students from the Northlands Job Corps Center trades of welding, culinary arts and auto body travelled to Randolph, Vermont to take part in the annual “Women Can Do” conference at Vermont Technical College. The event showcased a series of hands-on workshops for female high school students interested in career options in science, math, technology, public safety and skilled trades.

Northlands’ welding demo was a very popular exhibition. Volunteers could use welding equipment to make their own heart designs. Culinary Arts students demonstrated the making of apple fritters (and needless to say were a big hit). Meanwhile, Auto Body students showed how to bond a damaged fender, letting the high school girls try it out for themselves.

“It was great,” said welding student Tiffany Winston. “You could see the girls’ faces light up when they got the torch in their hands and started to work. It was really cool.”
