Northlands Job Corps Student Government Committed to Action

Logan Barbosa believes that the more active the Student Government Association is, the better. And that’s not just talk. Logan, the SGA president at Northlands Job Corps Academy in Vergennes, Vermont, and his fellow members have rolled out an aggressive agenda to address numerous issues important to students, including quality of life, behavior incentives and diversity.

“Student involvement is the key,” he said. “The SGA is most effective when it works on behalf of an interested and engaged community.”

Logan first served on the SGA as vice-president for a six-month term, and was elected president in March. He cites the SGA’s involvement in developing a new campus-wide Behavior Management Handbook as his group’s proudest achievement so far.

Center Director Jim Linday is a big believer in the importance of an active SGA. “Student Government is closest to the concerns of the student body,” he said. “Its involvement in campus activities and initiatives is a critical element of a successful center.”

The SGA will be kicking off a campaign in September to address the issue of bullying. It has purchased 500 bracelets for students and staff to demonstrate a united front against bullying, discrimination and other abusive behavior.

“Our goal is to make the campus climate more positive,” Logan said.

Hailing from Franklin, New Hampshire, Logan is studying to be a Certified Medical Assistant. He has already completed studies in two other trades: Business Technologies and Licensed Nursing Assistant certification. He plans to either join the Navy or go to college for dual majors in International Affairs and Justice Studies. Before coming to Northlands, he was elected to his local school board.

As SGA elections near, Logan plans to run for another term as president. “I want to continue to make the SGA’s voice a stronger one by increasing its size, involvement and input,” he said.

Logan is joined by his fellow SGA members.
