Molly on the ground, and up in the bucket at a recent work-based learning location in Vermont.
Describing herself before coming to Northlands Job Corps Academy in Vergennes, Vermont, student Molly West-Rosenthal used the words “sheltered” and “closed in.” Now, as an Urban Forestry student, Molly regularly climbs 60 feet up in trees with a chainsaw. “It’s gotten me way outside of my comfort zone,” she said. “I kind of surprised myself. I’ve grown a lot in Urban Forestry.”
Not only has Molly excelled in her trade of study, but she also serves as the Treasurer on the Student Government Association. “I wanted to get more involved with the Academy,” she said. “It’s been fascinating learning about all that goes on.” In addition, she has volunteered for a number of community service projects that showcase her natural artistic talents. She helped build Northlands’ award-winning Memorial Day Parade Float and created a decorative rain barrel that was auctioned off for an environmental fundraiser.
While being in a trade popular with males, Molly says she was never treated any differently in her Urban Forestry class. “It’s always felt like we’re one big family,” she said. “The instructors worked very, very hard to help me. I may not be the best climber, but I certainly can do it!”
Molly, who hails from Norwalk, Connecticut, is planning to continue growing her skills by going to to Advanced Training. She recommends Job Corps to anyone serious about making a positive change in their life. “This is an excellent opportunity to get prepared for a career,” she said. “I’m so glad I discovered this place!”
