Hannah recites the membership pledge in front of the rescue squad.
Hannah Williams is driven to make a difference. “I like to help people,” she says simply. But Hannah just doesn’t talk, she gets involved.
Coming to Northlands from Groton, Vermont to study Auto technologies, Hannah quickly got elected as vice president of the Student Government Association. She also took part in a fundraiser with her dorm to donate hundreds of dollars to a local charity. Now she has joined the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad (VARS) after going to Edison Job Corps in New Jersey for First Responder Training.
“She’s definitely involved in many groups and organizations here on campus,” Northlands Records Clerk Christina Brace said, “and there’s no question she’ll do a great job with VARS.”
Christina ought to know – she also serves as an EMT, driver and was recently elected as Secretary to the Rescue Squad. “I think Hannah will have an excellent bedside manner in the back of the ambulance.”
Hannah will be volunteering four 12-hour shifts a month at the squad, and will also attend at least two meetings each month for the first six months, one for training and one to help manage business. She was recently sworn in as a new volunteer, reciting the membership pledge in front of 40 members.
Currently, Hannah is the only Northlands Job Corps Academy student volunteering with VARS, but she hopes to get more students involved. “My brother got me into it, and I want to do the same with some of my classmates,” she said. “It teaches you a lot and develops a wide variety of skills. It’s a great experience.”
