Global Youth Service Day: Northlands Students Take a Creative Path Toward Japan Quake Relief

Members of the Northlands Job Corps Academy student group “Ladies of Success” are raising funds for Japan earthquake and tsunami relief in a very creative way. They are making paper cranes to send to the Bezos Family Foundation who has pledged to donate two dollars for each crane received toward relief efforts. In addition, all cranes the foundation receives will be incorporated into an art installation in Japan.

The group has set the ambitious goal of creating 1,000 paper cranes as part of Global Youth Service Day.

JamieLee Kiley, advisor to the “Ladies of Success,” says the group will be making cranes along with interested staff and students each weekday through Wednesday, April 20th. Students are being assisted by Vergennes resident Anne Humphrey, who is donating her time as a thank-you for Northlands students shoveling her driveway during a significant recent snowstorm.

“It’s another excellent example of how when we help the community, the community helps us back,” Ms. Kiley said.
