Twenty New Orleans Job Corps students and staffers assisted in the cleanup of homes flooded by Hurricane Isaac on Friday. The homes were located in LaPlace, Louisiana- a subdivision located 45 minutes west of New Orleans.
Water levels rose to two feet in the homes on Lexington Drive causing mold to rise up to four feet on the walls from the baseboards. The students completely gutted the homes tearing out walls, ripping out sheetrock and carrying out furniture ruined by the mold damage.
“As we were coming here, I had my phone out and saw that everyone in this neighborhood was gutting houses,” New Orleans Job Corps student Briana Holmes told WVUE-TV Fox 8 reporter Carolyn Scofield. “It’s so devastating for all these people to be homeless.”
“It feels good to help out. I’m willing to help at all times,” CPP student Dannico Blair told Scofield. “It feels wonderful to give back to the community.”
The students plan a return trip to the neighborhood in the next two weeks.
