Home Depot was looking to give back to the local community.
New Orleans Job Corps wanted to partner with a neighborhood business willing to provide some hands-on-training to the Center’s carpentry and electrical students.
The marriage got off to a rousing start last week and the honeymoon is expected to last for a while according to Home Depot GM Patrick Gary.
“I grew up in a tough environment just like these young people and someone opened the door for me,” says Gary. “I always told myself that when I had the opportunity to give back to the local community that I would definitely do it. So, that’s why I’m here today supporting this event…I want to help open doors for young men and women from backgrounds like mine.”
NOLA Electrical trainee Leon Washington viewed it as a very important day on his personal journey to success.
“I learned about electrical, plumbing, fixing ceiling fans, putting them together, grouting and just so many skills I can use in my career,” says Leon. “Working as an offshore electrician is my dream. Experiences like these give me confidence and make me feel like I can achieve my dreams”
