Camri Mixon was homeless in Nashville, TN, before she enrolled at Muhlenberg Job Corps. In just a few days, she will walk across the stage at the center’s graduation as the class valedictorian, having completed her Certified Clinical Medical Assistant training program and additional training for Phlebotomy Technician and Electrocardiogram Technician.

When Mixon was homeless, she sought refuge at a local homeless shelter in Nashville. There she heard about the Job Corps program, applied and was accepted into the Muhlenberg Job Corps program in just a few weeks. Mixon now says that being homeless and living in the shelter were a “blessing in disguise” because they led to her learning about the Job Corps program.

Mixon’s interest in the medical field comes from her desire to help others. “I love to help people in need. I got the passion for helping those people at a young age.” She remembers wanting to help her mother care for her grandmother who was diagnosed with cancer, and that fueled her desire for a future career helping others.

In addition to completing her career technical training programs and earning certifications in Basic Life Support, HIPAA and Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Mixon worked as a recreation leader on center, assisting with setup for various events.

She now has her eyes set on the Nov. 6 Muhlenberg Job Corps graduation. With the end in sight, Mixon says, “Job Corps helped me find my career path, and I made it my own.”
