The Muhlenberg Job Corps Center celebrated National Job Corps Commencement Day along with 125 other Job Corps Centers in the nation. The national day of celebration, sponsored by the National Job Corps Association was held August 22, 2014 to coincide with the 1963 signing of the Economic Opportunity Act by former president Lyndon B. Johnson.
Coleman Elridge, Senior Advisor and Executive Assistant to Kentucky’s 61st Governor Steve Beshear, was the guest speaker for the special commencement day. Elridge stated “it is left up to you to have the dignity to move forward in your life, the dignity to make a difference, you’re worth the dignity you’ve earned. Please remember that you are the faces of hope and opportunity. We are blessed as a commonwealth and nation for your journey.”
Graduate, Zsnatiya Murphy, from Stone Mountain, Georiga, was honored to be the student guest speaker who delivered powerful motivational speech to her peers, stating “as we shake hands, as we receive our diplomas, as we leave this center we can say that during the 50th Anniversary of Job Corps, we left accomplished. We will be known as the ones who came, took care of business, and prospered.” Twenty six graduates proudly walked the stage to receive their diplomas.
Muhlenberg Job Corps is operated by Horizons Youth Services of Harrisonburg, VA under the U.S. Department of Labor in Philadelphia, PA.
