Jacqui Holland of Mississippi Job Corps Spends the Day with Maxwell Townes of Senator Roger Wicker’s Office

On June 9, the Mississippi Job Corps Center sent one student to Senator Roger Wicker’s office for a one-day internship in which Maxwell Towne mentored the student for a typical 9-5 day. This unique event, sponsored by the Friends of Job Corps Congressional Caucus, was designed to expose Job Corps youth to the inner-workings of a congressional district office.

Mississippi Job Corps Center student, Jacqui Holland was selected after an interview process to determine who was eager to learn more about their elected officials and the role they play to protect and strengthen local services to constituents. Jacqui Holland is 22 and has been at the center for 6 months and is specializing in Office Administration. “Being able to work in a positive working environment.”

Mentor a Job Corps Student Day gave Maxwell Townes a chance to serve as positive role models to Jacqui Holland. “Holland was an outstanding student with excellent office training.”

Mentor a Job Corps Student Day sponsor, Friends of Job Corps Congressional Caucus was established in 2006 to heighten the awareness and appreciation for Job Corps among policymakers, Administration decision-makers, and the broader public. Since its founding, the Caucus has helped establish a voice for Job Corps on Capitol Hill communicating the role Job Corps plays in the socio-economic well-being of local communities and the nation.

Job Corps is the most effective dropout recovery and career preparation program in the nation. The program succeeds because it is market-driven and responds to employers’ needs. Job Corps’ unique residential nature provides allows the program to provide young adults’ not only high school diplomas and industry-recognized credentials, but also the quality social and employability skills training that employers regularly cite as the most important entry-level workforce qualification.
