GED students from the Milwaukee Job Corps Center participated in hatching baby chicks in the classroom. After consulting with HVAC instructors and students, the class built an incubator using a lamp kit, foam cooler, PC fan, and a re-purposed cell phone charger. The students monitored temperature, humidity, and growth of the embryo over the 21 day gestation period. The class achieved a hatch rate of 70%, which is extremely successful. Student Kenny Jones said, “I really liked building the incubator and watching the chicks grow inside their eggs. I can’t believe it actually worked!” The GED class studied embryonic development, used the statistics gathered to understand ratio, and also learned about electricity and electrical terminology.
