Miami Students Compete in State Competition

With the aim of helping students succeed in a competitive global economy, SkillsUSA brings industry professionals, teachers, students and hundreds of sponsors together to innovatively support student leadership and workforce development. Its mission is focused on guiding young members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens. SkillsUSA sponsors dynamic technical and leadership contests for students in local, state and national level Competitions. In communities across the country, the organizations chapters also engage in job shadowing, community service and employability skills training. The spectrum of the SkillsUSA network is far reaching and includes key partners from manufacturing, construction, and health care industries to communications fields, transportation agencies and fortune 500 companies. With an official membership number of 330,703, its popularity is growing across the nation. Miami Job Corps is proud to participate in such a renowned program, especially since SkillsUSA mirrors Job Corps core principles of developing workforce readiness through hands-on experience that’s aligned with industry standards. Over the years, MJCC’s Applied Academic Faculty Jacques LeBlanc has diligently engaged Miami Job Corps SkillsUSA Chapter students in leadership activities. A recent highlight is MJCC’s involvement in the 2012 Florida SkillsUSA State Leadership Conference in Pensacola, Florida. MJCC students Joyelle Gardiner, Denice Daley, Jonathan Batista, Jonathan Valdez, Tyran Ingram and Otis Black participated. They competed in Major Appliances and earned 2nd Place in the Quiz Bowl. Quiz Bowl is a competition where selected participants knowledge of current events, professional development and general academics is tested. Yet beyond competitions and the mastery of academic and technical skills, SkillsUSA also focuses on character building opportunities as essential tools for youth developing to become productive citizens.  Members of the Miami SkillsUSA chapter, who are also enrolled in Miami Job Corps Culinary Arts program, recently had an opportunity to give back to the community. These students volunteered with the Chefs for Charity Project at Camillus House, one of the largest homeless relief shelters in South Florida, and prepared meals in the Soup Kitchen for over 400 clients in need.  Kudos to our MJCC SkillsUSA team for all their outstanding achievements!
