Sunshine State Job Corps Centers Impact Communities & Youth

In Florida, we are proud to have 5 Job Corps centers located throughout our state located in Miami, Pinellas County, Gainesville, Homestead and Jacksonville. These Centers annually generate about $102,486,726 in local economic activity and support over 1,249 jobs throughout the state.

Job Corps centers in the state of Florida and across the nation, with their drop out recovery programs that provide academic and career training support services, overt the significant losses in taxable earnings and Medicaid payments that might otherwise cost our government millions of dollars.

From a tax-payers standpoint, the national statistics that estimate a total lifetime cost of $469,200 for each high school dropout is alarming.

Yet each year, these Job Corps centers provide career technical training and job placement services to over 2,800 of the 100,000 economically disadvantaged youth that drop out of our Florida schools each year.  When you consider that the average cost per student who resides on a safe campus with education, job training, conflict resolution, mentoring, counseling and wellness programs is just $87 a day, you’ll find that Job Corps is priceless in supporting the transformation of 60,000 of the nation’s most at risk youth.

In spite of the labor market challenges at hand, more than 80 percent of Florida Job Corps graduates continue to transition into jobs or enter the military within a year of leaving the program and the vast majority leave with a high school diploma or equivalency.

With these key points in mind:

  • Job Corps is an investment in our youth and thus our nation’s future.
  • Our local Florida economies benefit from the smart investment impacts of Job Corps.
  • Florida’s young constituency and taxpayers cannot afford to give up on Job Corps now.
