On February 29th- March 1st, 2012 a total of ten students from Loring Job Corps Center had an outstanding opportunity to intern with Secretary of State, Charles E. Summers and LJCC Honor/Color Guard posted colors at the Senate of Maine as well. We had students representing our CDL (Commercial Truck Licensing- Heavy Trucks), C.N.A. ( Certified Medical Assistant) to CISCO Academy technical vocational training on this internship program.
The students were grateful to visit and intern with the Secretary of State’s team members at their offices, the Capital Building, the Blaine House (where they met the First Lady, Mrs. LePage), Crime Lab with Lt. William Harwood , The Maine Archive was another area explored, becoming a part of the Senate of Maine by posting colors, being introduced in the House of Representatives, having lunch with the Attorney General, William Schneider and with Secretary of State, Charles E. Summers all were an incredible experiences. All the students noted how easy it was to approach, speak directly or even ask questions of our Secretary of State, Charles Summers. It was stated from the interns “we felt very comfortable with the Secretary of State and he made as feel right at home plus gave us so much more insight into the world of government”.
Many Representatives from the House being Bernard Ayotte and Peter Edgecomb took time to show them the buildings they occupy and their function. In the Senate after the posting of colors Senator Troy Jackson spent time answering questions and explaining his role as a Maine Senate representative.
Natacha Ortega, LJCC Student Government President stated she felt like she was a “movie star” for everyone from State Senators to Representatives wanted to know her name, her role at Job Corps and she posed for many, many pictures. To be told ,Secretary of State Charles Summers and your team members Lynn Harvey, Barbara Redmond, Megan Barnes and Thomas Arnold all made a big impact upon these young adults and it will be two days they will remember forever. It set an example to them that they were recognized as outstanding individuals, all involved took interest in their future endeavors and their individual achievements . Sometimes it just takes one individual to impact another person’s outlook on life and these past two days this accomplished was done.
Again this was all hosted by Secretary of State, Charles Summers Jr. and organized by his assistant Megan . LJCC students were escorted by Business Community Liaison, Pamela D. Buck and CSM Roger Felix Military Prep. Instructor and SGA Advisor.
