Loring Job Corps Student wins “Northern Star 2011” solo singer competition hosted by Aroostook United Way

United Way of Aroostook Northern Star Overall Winner, one our own student’s DaShawn Russell!
The overall winner of the Northern Star proudly presented by United Way of Aroostook was selected by the audience on Sunday afternoon. Over 830 packed the Caribou Performing Arts Center to view the talented singers and to choose 2011 Northern Star. It showcased incredible gifted singers with stiff competition. The audience had to select the top two soloist and the judges selected one other.

The audience selected DaShawn Lamarr Russell of Limestone, Loring Job Corps Center of Maine and Megan Ouellette from Clair, New Brunswick. The judges selected Robert Helstrom of Washburn, Maine as the third soloist. After a second song was sung by all three finalists the audience voted again and selected DaShawn Russell as the 2011 Northern Star! Also three group finalists performed for the title of Northern Star United and Gabrielle and Christian Sirois a brother-sister act won from Drummond, NB.

Now DaShawn is the official Ambassador for United Way of Aroostook for 2011!
This is one of United Way largest fundraisers for the year their Campaign Goal is $520,000. As of February 26, 2011 they were at ¾ of their goal.
