Loring Job Corps Center HBI Electrical Students engage in Community Service at Maine Veterans Home

Over two years ago, LJCC Home Builders Institute Electrical Instructor Otis May took it upon himself to engage his classroom in community service. Bi-weekly visits to the Maine Veterans Home located in Caribou, Maine has been the ongoing agenda to visit veteran residents and spend valuable time in their companionship. Students have stated they did not realize what some of these individuals have done for us in the past as servicemen and women. Taking the residents outside for a walk, playing checkers or just visiting and speaking with them has been an eye opening experience. This is an opportunity for them to understand and learn from others in the community they currently reside in and learn life-long lessons from others of different cultures and backgrounds. Also, every Friday the electrical students take used cable and strip the cables to the bare copper wiring then recycle the copper wiring in which the funds are given to charitable organizations in the local community!
