Camp Adventure a Type-1 diabetes camp for children assisted by Loring Job Corps students for Community Service

 

August 10, 11 & 12th, 2012

To date one of the largest 2012 volunteer Community Service projects taken on by LJCC. “Ride Aroostook” a weekend event that was hosted by Cary Medical and University of Maine at Presque Isle that was a fundraiser for type-1 diabetes camp named Camp Adventure for young children up to high school age. The occasion involved road bike cyclist that raised funds to participate by biking up to 80 miles a day on the picturesque roads in Aroostook County, over 100 bikers from all over the United States participated.

Our students had to leave center by 5:15am in the morning both Saturday and Sunday to travel to Presque Isle to be placed on the bike route for directions, cheering the bikers on all dressed up in festive costumes and gave encouraging support. The Friday before the event we had students set up for the event and Sunday evening clean up all the areas used for the event. Over 1000 hours of community service was completed with close to 50 students participating during this weekend!

Media of the event was aired on WAGM-TV channl 8  and the following week’s local newspapers covered the event being the Aroostook Republican and Star Herald News.
