Long Beach Job Corps students made the city a lot cleaner by working alongside community members from Cal Heights Clean Streets on two consecutive Thursdays and beautified a Long Beach neighborhood as part of Global Youth Service Day.
On the first Thursday, 48 students gathered at the intersection of Wardlow Avenue and Atlantic Avenue. The students were divided into 4 groups with community members and staff members in each group. Each group walked in a different direction picking up wrappers, paper, and whatever did not belong in the area. Each group then crossed the street at a designated intersection and walked back to the meeting place with full trash bags in hand and the feeling they had helped make the neighborhood a better place.
Just one week later 39 more students participated. The community volunteers were surprised how much debris had accumulated in only one week and were grateful for the assistance of the students. The students learned the importance of not littering and keeping the city clean.
