On March 18, the Applied Reading students and High School Online students combined to research five countries, Italy, China, Mexico, India, and the Marshall Islands. Throughout the week, students worked in groups to learn about their selected country. They drew maps of their country and discussed the importance of the colors and pictures on the map. The students studied the spoken language of their country and learned how to say hello and count from one to 10 in that language. They learned about the culture and foods and how other countries differ from ours but also have similarities.
As part of the learning experience, the instructors arranged food for each of the researched countries. For China, the students had fried rice from a local restaurant. For Italy, the students got a taste of pizza with “real” cheeses. They tasted enchiladas made from scratch for their “taste of Mexico” experience. Spam sandwiches were eaten for their Marshall Islands’ dish. Chicken tiki marsala was eaten for their “taste of India.”
The students who participated in this learning activity were Mia Clemons, Jacob Coleman, Reshod Davis, Andrew Erakrik, Gertrik Erakrik, Election Gideon, Malcolm Marrs, Jessica McDonald, Devontell Reynolds, Marquevis Walker, and Lakeitha Willingham.
