A Day in Someone Else’s Shoes

Five students were chosen to participate in a “Day in Someone Else’s Shoes” event to focus on disability awareness and bullying on October 5th. Students were tasked to spend the day as if they had a disability and present an essay of their experiences.
Devin North and Ebony Webb played the part of a deaf person, Monique McGahee played the part of a person confined to a wheelchair, Carl McKinney played the part of a person who had to use crutches and Javonne Sanders played the part of a blind person. During the monthly awards assembly on October 7th, the students shared with the student body their experiences and stated that it was very hard to go on with daily routines having a disability and expressed empathy for those who have disabilities. All students said they were glad to have this opportunity and felt a sigh of relief when the experiment was over. Staff and students were also treated to a skit that was written by Mark Bennett about how to deal with bullying and its effects. He received a round of applause. All participants did a wonderful job and look forward to more activities of the sort.
