Laredo Job Corps Center is Honored with The Community Green Award

The Community Green Award was established to recognize specific advancements in industry, building, media, organizations, and public policy. Whether helping to protect our air and water, or raising the consciousness of millions. On September 18, 2011, local TV station KGNS and Keep Laredo Beautiful recognized the Laredo Job Corps staff and students for all our green efforts and all the hard work made in the 24 months.
Some of these accomplishments:
Center Initiatives for Trainees
• Electrical CTT trainees involved in replacing outdated wiring and bulbs throughout the center to make them more eco-friendly;
• Culinary Arts CTT trainees recycling used cooking oil;
• BAM and Welding CTT trainees properly disposing hazardous chemicals (already a safety given) and recycling building materials and working with eco-friendly tools and materials; and
• HOT, BOT I and BOT II CTT trainees recycling used paper
Center Initiatives for Staff:
• Recycling used paper, aluminum cans, plastic and glass containers;
• Simple acts such as turning off lights and equipment when not in use;
• Gradual transition from Styrofoam containers (for cafeteria) to more eco-friendly versions;
• Re-setting sprinkler systems to save water; and
• Routine maintenance for center vehicles to increase fuel efficiency

The trainees have also been involved in several community-oriented environmental projects such as cleaning along the banks of the Rio Grande, clearing the Paso del Indio Trail at Laredo Community College and working with Keep Laredo Beautiful on a Beautification Project for District 7 and various projects throughout the City of Laredo.

Our Community Garden is ready and the Culinary Arts Students have been selling produce such as zucchinis, cucumbers and other vegetables at the Farmers Market.  Together with Keep Laredo Beautiful, students perform regular clean-ups around the city, our students are always looking for ways to protect the environment and preserve natural resources in the community. We are also proud to announce the installation of our new Wind Turbine that will help up with our Electrical cost in eco-friendly manner.
