T never imagined that a casual conversation with a stranger on a street in Philadelphia would lead to a career, but it did. The meeting resulted in him enrolling at the Keystone Job Corps Center studying network cabling and electrical. Graduating he was hired by FLUOR as a utility worker. He quickly recognized opportunity that led to advancement. After a few months he began helping the “rod-buster” and learned how to tie re-bar and read drawings.
The journeymen and foreman were pivotal to his success. He stated ” they would stand right beside me to make sure I knew what I was doing.” This guidance reminded him of the direction he received at Job Corps. He further stated ” Keystone prepared me for this type of mentoring.” In less than three years T became a journeyman rodbuster and now finds himself a mentor.
He still keeps in touch with his instructors at Keystone and hopes in the future to return as a graduation speaker to share his story.
