Keystone Float Honors 9/11 Responders

Students from the construction trades joined together to assist the Hazleton Heights Fire Company.  Several months ago the Keystone Center was approached about building a float for the annual Greater Hazleton Fun Fest Parade on September 11th.  This year’s event was particularly noteworthy because it marked the 10th anniversary of the attack on the twin towers.

Instructors embraced the opportunity and with their students exchanged ideas on the best way to approach the task.  They started by building a scale model of the twin towers on an eight foot platform, cut holes allowing  light to be emitted from the structure, placed  343 flags in memory of those firefighters who lost their lives and mounted a small video monitor in one of the towers showing photos from that day.

With many of the students too young at the time of the attack to understand completely its historical significance the project became a learning experience and a solemn tribute to the responders on that fateful day.
