In September, Job Corps Student Ambassadors across the country officially began the Y2Y campaign to help prevent violence among young people.
And the Joliet Job Corps Center was no exception. The students have been committed to promoting peaceful behavior on a daily basis.
In October, they decided to raise money to donate to Guardian Angel Community Services, one of the Center’s longtime partners and an agency that works to prevent domestic violence.
A representative from the organization meets weekly with the students, raising awareness of domestic violence through focus groups and guest speakers. The Student Ambassadors wanted to make a donation as a token of appreciation.
The Student Ambassadors also have been sponsoring bake sales on Fridays since October to make additional donations to the Guardian Angels.
Student Leader Tunpanga Finley is president of the Rosa Parks Dorm. On Nov. 20, she bought the last slice of marble cake that was for sale that day.
“I’ll purchase the slice of cake because I want to make sure I do my part in helping promote Y2Y,” she told Mary Jackson, supervisor of the Center’s Snack Bar.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, however. In December, the Center’s drama team will present the stage play “FREE,” a production that sheds light on ways to decrease violence in the community.
