Students Volunteer at Aurora’s Feed My Starving Children

The Recreation Department took 12 students to volunteer at Feed My Starving Children on June 22.

The non-profit organization and its volunteers pack boxes of meals that are distributed to hungry children in 70 countries.

Before the students were able to begin their work, they learned about the history of the organization. In 1987, Minnesota businessman Richard Proudfit began the group, working with food scientist Dr. Richard Fulmer and others to develop a fortified rice and soy casserole for children.

The students worked for nearly two hours on June 22, and each one had a particular job to do. Destinee Lambert and Cheyanne Szabo spooned rice, vegetables and soy. Dwayne Wade and Marlon Brumfield opened the bags, and Tatijuna Lockett sealed them. Daniel Lewis labeled the bags after Lillie Perkins and Sedrick Cooper weighed them.

In the end, the Joliet Job Corps group packed 15 boxes of food. The students enjoyed the

activity and plan on returning to do more community service work for the organization.
