Students Learn Techniques to Manage Aggressive Behavior

Several student leaders and Peer Leader-ship Coordinator Thanesha Sorrells worked together on July 28 to lead a Peer-Directed Program for other students.

The subject was Managing Aggressive Behavior, or MAB, a six-part training. It was designed to provide the members of the Student Government Association and Dorm Government leaders with the knowledge necessary to train their peers. During the sessions, the student leaders demonstrated therapeutic methods, explained Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and the definition of power.

In the first session, the students learned about the three developmental stages of young people: early adolescence, middle adolescence and late adolescence. The students also considered the difference between rules and expectations, comparing and contrasting the two concepts.

During the third session, they focused on the real meaning of power. They talked about how the misuse of power can be detrimental to the direction of a group, noting that leaders who don’t handle their power well often make emotional decisions.

In some situations, leaders who are experiencing conflict will allow their emotions to dictate their actions. The students were cautioned to be aware of their emotional state when making decisions.

Student leaders will began providing MAB training for their peers on Wednesdays during Structured Evening Programming.
