Voting matters.
On Feb. 5, Joliet Township Clerk Beth Ann May spoke to Career Preparation Period students on the importance of going to the polls. With the presidential primary just around the corner on March 15, Ms. May wanted to deliver the message that every voice counts.
To better explain the voting process, Ms. May distributed sample ballots so students could familiarize themselves with one. She also gave a brief history of Illinois townships and explained how they are one of the oldest forms of government in the state.
During her presentation, Ms. May also encouraged the students to consider a career in government. She gave examples of how no matter what your interests are, you can usually find a government job where those interests can be pursued. Ms. May emphasized the fact that the right to vote is something everyone shares and is a privilege that shouldn’t be taken lightly.
During lunchtime, Ms. May set up a table in the cafeteria and provided an opportunity for students to register to vote, and she plans to return in March to do it again.
