The Career Transition Period Department took a group of Grad 90 students to visit the DuSable Museum of African-American History this week in Chicago’s historic Hyde Park neighborhood.
The DuSable Museum was founded in 1961 by Dr. Margaret Burroughs and a host of other Chicagoans who saw a need to expose others to the history of African-Americans. The DuSable Museum has a collection of artifacts and objects that promote understanding of African-American history and culture
The students took a guided tour of the museum that included an informative movie about the very important role played by children during the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham, Alabama. Student Timothy Erhardt was heartbroken by the struggle and inhumane treatment that the people of Birmingham endured during their quest for equal treatment.
The Freedom Now Mural seemed to move the students the most. The large carving illustrates 400 years of African-American history and includes Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois and Mary McLeod Bethune.
