Graduate Makes Joliet Job Corps Proud

Danny Johnson, 21, of Joliet dropped out of high school because he didn’t feel it was for him. He worked at McDonald’s for two years but didn’t see his future improving. He came to Joliet Job Corps to get a high school degree and a trade that would earn him more than $8 an hour. After one year, he is a Joliet Job Corps success story – earning $11.50 an hour (and $17.50 with overtime, which is in steady supply) as a security guard for Yale Enforcement Services. He’s working at the Intermodal Center warehouses in Elwood from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. five or more days a week and caring for his daughter on weekends. He says his security training with Charles Betts has served him well. “Having a CPR certification was a big plus,” he said. “Mr. Betts’ class was a big plus, knowing how to handle bomb threats. handcuffing, perimeter checks .. it all helps.” He also has this caution against drug use: “if you test clean for the job, you need to stay clean. If you somehow get hurt on the job, they will test you for drugs and if you’re dirty, you won’t get workmen’s comp.” He was hired June 2 and underwent three days of training before starting on the job, which he enjoys. Danny was featured as a panelist on the “A” Game event at Joliet Job Corps in May and made Page 1 news in the local newspaper for his life story. Now he’s making everyone back here at Joliet Job Corps proud that we could have a hand in his success!
