Black Teen Summit at Joliet Junior College

In honor of Black History Month, the Career Transition Department took an annual trip to Joliet Junior College to attend the Black Teen Summit on Feb. 12.

When the group arrived, Antione Edwards, the college’s Outreach and Retention Specialist, explained the workshops the students would be attending and that the keynote address would be given by Tim Lee, founder of One Black Man INC.

During the event, the students learned that community colleges can be an excellent choice. The two-year programs allow the  students time to consider a career choice without the pressure of declaring a major.

Experts say one of the biggest benefits of attending community college is that students can save money and live near home while finding their passion.

The Black Teen Summit was an eye-opener for Joliet Job Corps Center students. They learned so much about the world of higher education. The event included booths representing the school’s admissions department and financial aid office along with the various clubs and organizations.

A Joliet Junior College Academic Advisor met with student Brandon Smith to better explain the college process. Brandon is a Joliet resident, and the advisor explained the application process, how to obtain financial aid and the timeline for enrollment.

All of the Grad 90 students appreciated the chance to learn more about the college experience.
