The Joliet Job Corps Center and the Community

Volunteer tutors have made a real difference at the Joliet Job Corps Center.

They have assisted students with the more difficult aspects of their studies in math and English, helping them complete the work to earn a high school diploma or GED.

So that was the focus recently during the combined Community Relations Council and Academic Advisory Council held in the Culinary Arts dining room.

Although the Center has several wonderful tutors, more are needed, particularly volunteers who are ex-perts in English or understand the complex material included in the ASVAB test for applicants to the mili-tary.

“We are looking to make more partnerships with the community,” said Laura Rocha, the Center’s Academic Manager.

Will County Board Member Denise Winfrey attend-ed the meeting, and she noted that there are retired teachers among the membership of the National Hook- Up of Black Women who might be perfect for the role.
