The Y2Y Ambassadors and Student Government Officers visited Councilwoman J. Pittman at City Hall on April 26, 2024. The students had an opportunity to enter the council chambers and understand the decision-making process. Students were warmly greeted by the councilwoman’s staff. The councilwoman had a wonderful interactive session with the students, they discussed the process of local government, how the council process works and how those decision impacted local districts. Councilwoman J. Pittman covers District 10 which was combined during the recent re-districting legislation. The Y2Y Ambassador explained the focus behind Y2Y and asked the Councilwoman to sign their banner. The Y2Y students inquired about crime in the area and how it impacts the center. She stated that statistical crime in the area is down in some areas, but that burglary was up.
The tour included a visited to the mayor’s area as well as other councilmen offices. The students learned the history of local government as well as the changes/growth of downtown Jacksonville. They were also given a book about the history of Jacksonville. The councilwoman invited the students to attend a council meeting in the near future.
