State Representative Swears In New Leadership

Media (JACKSONVILLE, Florida)  On Monday July 30, 2012 State Representative Reginald Fullwood swore in the newly elected and appointed members of the Jacksonville Job Corps Student Government Association.  The students stood proudly in front of 350 of their peers and Jacksonville Job Corps staff as they committed to upholding the constitution and bylaws of the Association.

 State Representative Reginald Fullwood is a native of Jacksonville and was one of the youngest City Councilmen in the history of the city.  He was elected for 2 terms as a member of the City council and currently serves as the Florida State Representative for District 15.  He understands the unique and awesome responsibility of caring for and leading others.  The students were honored and delighted that the Representative took the time out of his busy schedule to return and speak to them in their new leadership roles.

Center Director Kenderson Hill congratulated the newly elected officers of the Jacksonville Job Corps Center and charged them to lead by example.  The student leaders are President Robert Brooks, Vice President Jason Slosh, Secretary Yasenia Zurtuche, Treasurer Diamonque Osborne, Sergeant of Arms Alex Shively, Activities Coordinator Joseph Thomas Jr., Male Chief Justice Paul Mincey, Female Chief Justice Anisa Taylor, Non Res Representative and Student Advisor Giovanna Flammia.  The students will have the opportunity to serve in community projects, Meet representatives in local and congressional government, Leadership Training, lead on-center committees and represent the 350 members of the Jacksonville Job Corps Center.

 The students were captivated by the message the representative delivered to them, SGA President Brooks took to heart what the Representative said about delayed dreams in deciding to follow his dream in running for office at the tender age of 22.  Yasenia Zurtuche remembers him saying “don’t put off what you want to do…just do it”. Joseph Thomas, activities Coordinator heard “no matter what it takes don’t give up on your dreams and Jason Slosh Vice President reflects on what the Representative said how much he values working with the elderly. 

The students indicated that they were honored to be sworn in by such an amazing role model.  The students will serve in their respective roles for 6 months before completing there trades.

Jacksonville Job Corps center trains about 525 students per year.  The young men and women study to become: carpenters, electricians, certified nurse assistants, office administrators, pharmacy, Computer and HVAC technicians and other professionals. The center’s top priority is to teach eligible young people the skills they need to become employable and to help place them into meaningful careers.   It is self evident that Job Corps works…..and it works for our community.

Job Corps is a taxpayer-supported education and career technical training program administered by the United States Labor Department.  The program helps 16 to 24 year old men and women to improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training. The Job Corps program serves about 60,000 students each year at 124 centers across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
