On August 19, 2011 the Jacksonville Corps Center kicked off the first phase of the Let’s Move Campaign inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama. The center partnered with the Duval County Health Department, Deem Wellness Center and Premier Vending to assist with the center fitness activities and nutritious alternatives to high fat food choices. The Healthy Eating and Active Lifestyles Initiative was a fun filled day for students and staff. The activities included walking trails, individual fitness workouts, basketball, volleyball, workshops and menus that were nutritious and delicious.
The students assisted in selecting the menus and physical activities for the center. Nutrition classes were presented by the Health Department engaged students and staff by providing information on food groups, health issues brought by over-weight, heart disease, high blood pressure and other related illnesses that are impacted by a poor diet and lack of exercise. Students and staff pledged to make conscious choices when selecting food choices and increasing physical activities.
The H.E.A.L.S. committee meet regularly to outline a year long Healthy Eating and Lifestyle plan for the students and staff at the Jacksonville Job Corps Center.
