Make a Difference Day is designed as America’s largest day of service. Every year millions of Americans reach out to help others. The day is an opportunity for Job Corps centers to establish new partnerships with community organizations and employers.

Student from the Jacksonville Job Corps Center partnered with the North Florida Susan G. Komen Foundation to volunteer and participate in the race.  Students set a goal of 1000.00 to raise for the event.  Over several months the students hosted bake sales, dress down days and sought donations to achieve their goal.

Student Government Association Douglas Breland presented Ms. Goulet and Ms. Penny with a check for 1,556.00 on December 11, 2012 at their local office.  Over 40 students and staff participated in the event.   The students volunteered the entire week leading up to the event at First Place Sports.  Students at the Center are committed to making a difference in the Jacksonville community.  Mr. Douglas Breland SGA President stated that volunteering is an invigorating feeling when you give back to a community that gives you so much.  Douglas is a 22 student from Orlando, Florida seeking certification in the Electrical Trade and has been at Job Corps for 11 months.

In addition to the impact on communities, research shows that sustained community service can lead to increased levels of academic learning and workforce readiness skills among youth.

Job Corps is a taxpayer-supported education and career technical training program administered by the United States Labor Department.  The program helps 16 to 24 year old young men and women to improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training. The Job Corps program serves about 60,000 students each year at 125 centers across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
