Hubert H Humphrey held a Red Cross drive on its campus last week. Forty-three students volunteered and thirty life-saving pints were collected. Yvette Whitebird and Autionna McGee, nursing assistants in training, worked at the check-in desk to make sure that preparation protocol was followed. Nursing students also handled the canteen for the donors and watched carefully for any signs of faintness as they doled out fruit snacks and juice. This was a good, if brief, work-based learning experience for the four nursing students who volunteered. The Red Cross team supervisor, Adrian Washington, was at the center for the first time and he spoke highly of the students, saying what a nice, polite group of students they were. The Red Cross needs don’t change, but donations tend to go down in the summer so this session means a lot to the Red Cross.
