Hubert H Humphrey held its Reality Central event for all students on the center. It is a simulation of entry into the work world after Job Corps. Because keeping a job is dependent on understanding, planning for and managing other parts of life, the students get to see all the parts as an integral package. The goals are to improve basic financial skills and modify their views of wants versus needs. They rent an apartment, choose transportation, get insurance, pay for utilities, get furniture, groceries, clothing, health services and make entertainment choices based on a real salary. At each station they can make good and bad choices. All entries are made in a check register which is tallied at the end. If they are over budget, they have to retrace their steps to scale back on costs.
