Learning math at Humphrey can be messy! March 14th is Pi Day, a celebration of all things mathematical, on the campus. Preparation began in the weeks before. The Academics Department organized the event, first polling the students for their favorite choice of pie-in-the face recipients and then signing students up for six problem solving events, the winners to earn pie-throwing rights. One of the contests was memorizing as many digits of Pi as possible and LaTanga Travis won with a recitation of 204 digits. Another was a team elimination event based on speed of problem-solving. CNA student LaTanga Travis, OA student Low Paw, and MOS student Robdu Woliye wait to take a turn as Pre-CNA/HHA student Hawi Gelta works her problem. The lucky staff nominees were Food Service Manager Gil Tetter, CTT Manager Terry Holman, Academic Instructors Steve Munson and Matt Dahl, TCU Instructor James Urbach and Center Director Dave MacKenzie. It was a sign of their good sportsmanship and the accuracy of the students’ aim that covered the faces and heads of all six staff people in whipped cream. This event generates a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for math skills and shows how fun math can be.
