Painting for peace

HH Humphrey’s PAWP department answered the call from Todd DeFrance, coordinator for IUPAT’s Local 62.  An Iraqi vet had bought a house that was in bad shape and, while he was working on it, had been overwhelmed at the work needed to paint the exterior.  John Kaiser, IUPAT instructor on campus assembled a student crew and got the job started.  “There was a lot of sanding and scraping before we could paint,” John said, “but it’s a good opportunity for real world experience for the students and a chance to do a good deed for a vet.”  All surfaces of the one-and-one-half story house were sanded, primed and painted, using Duration, a green painting product that the students had learned about from John.  The final steps were painting all the trim and accepting a thank-you from a grateful soldier.
